Punjab Fog Update: Multiple Motorway Sections Closed
Thick blankets of fog and “beyond hazardous” levels of smog continue to disrupt life across Punjab, leading to the closure of several key motorway sections and a sharp decline in air quality across the country.
Motorway Closures for Public Safety
On Thursday, the Motorway Police spokesperson announced the suspension of traffic on multiple routes to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of commuters. The visibility levels dropped significantly, making travel extremely dangerous.
The following sections have been closed to all traffic:
- Lahore-Sialkot Motorway (M-11): Completely closed due to zero visibility.
- M-2: Sections from Lahore to Hiran Minar.
- M-3: Routes from Faizpur to Jaranwala.
- M-4: Section from Khanewal to Multan.
- M-5: Major stretch from Multan to Rohri.
Authorities have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during late-night and early-morning hours and to use fog lights if travel is essential.
Air Quality Crisis: Peshawar and Lahore Hit Hard
While fog has halted transport, the “silent killer”—smog—continues to plague major cities. According to global environmental monitoring websites, air pollution levels have reached alarming heights.
Peshawar has emerged as the most polluted city in Pakistan today, recording a staggering 577 on the Air Quality Index (AQI). Meanwhile, Lahore continues its streak as one of the world’s most polluted urban centers, currently ranking 3rd globally with an AQI of 225.
AQI Levels Across Key Cities:
| City | AQI Level | Category |
| Peshawar | 577 | Hazardous |
| Gujranwala | 344 | Hazardous |
| Gujrat | 249 | Very Unhealthy |
| Lahore | 225 | Very Unhealthy |
Medical experts have warned residents, especially children and the elderly, to wear masks outdoors and keep windows closed to mitigate the health risks associated with this extreme level of pollution.
